Welcome to game 5 of the Texas Renegades versus Calgary Dragons series of the S27 Challenge Cup playoffs. It's been a tight race so far with the series tied at two games apiece, but that changes, tonight. Game 4 was a bit more lopsided than the rest, but it's still anyone's series to take. Let's take a look at the previous scores, as well as the two star-filled starting lineups here in American Airlines Center.

And here we go!

Opening faceoff, Kinsler gets right in and wins it, puck goes skittering backwards towards Lidstrom. A little sequence of back-and-forth passing, and Lidstrom finds himself with the puck once more, right on the Calgary blue line. He takes a big slapshot, but it's a bit off target, flying wide! Allen is right there to pick up the loose puck

He loops around the net, spins and fires...

but Hill jumps in front of the shot! It ricochets right onto Alexandersen's stick and he attempts to bring it back towards the slot, but Pergher says no! A huge open-ice hit, and the Calgary defenseman has the puck.

Right in kind, Kinsler swoops in and nudges Pergher off of the puck, bringing it back under the Renegades' control. A bit of cycling, with all five Texas skaters working together. Brojled has the puck, steps in, and takes a shot, but Pedersen dives in the way! Mack picks up the loose puck and flings it all the way down the ice, getting the icing call and giving the Calgary defense a short break.

Mack wins the next faceoff, Zerchai picks up the puck right away, but it doesn't last! The two teams exchange a series of quick hits, and and Brojled once more emerges with the puck! He fires off a quick snapper, but Wong makes the easy save.

Alexandersen wins the ensuing faceoff, keeping the puck in Texas' possession. A little bit of skating and passing, Wollker dumping the puck in followed by another faceoff, but otherwise a fairly uneventful minute.

Kinsler wins the faceoff, just like all the others, but somebody's out of position! It isn't exactly clear who, but it is very clear who breaks free with the puck! It's McZehrl, on a tear towards Weekes! He hasn't seen much rubber so far, but is still calm and composed as ever. McZ flicks the puck towards the Texas net, but it goes wide, rebounding back towards the slot. He brings the puck around... fires off another shot, much closer to the net this time

Another few minutes of boring horizontal hockey, so let's skip to another good part.

8 and a half minutes in, Kinsler wins another faceoff for Texas in the Calgary zone. Allen swings in behind and pucks up the puck, followed up immediately with a quick shot, but it goes wide! A bit of a scramble for the loose puck, and somehow Allen finds it again, once more sending it towards Wong! A standard pad save, but the puck skitters loose! Brojled is there to flick it in...

Wong with a huge save! Flashing the leather to draw a whistle, faceoff in the Calgary zone.

Another few minutes of slow play, our two competitors taking turns skating in and shooting, followed by a good save with no rebound, followed by a faceoff. Another exciting thing!

15 minutes into the first period, another faceoff, this time with Jagr winning the draw against Kinsler in the Texas zone. Neither team seems to want the puck, as several times in a row, some of the younger players just continually dump it in. Except, until Mack sees a chance.

Long pass up to Zoidberg, who skates it in and bips it over to Pedersen, who has been pushing and shoving his way into a place right in front of Weekes' face-eyes.

A little twist, an extremely short shot, more of an attempted tip-in really...

I automatically assume whenever somebody says 'this (anything I do)' it means I fucked up. Glad that y'all think it's good so far (except maybe Deener).

The last three minutes of the period are pretty quiet, as Texas seems to have had the wind taken out of their sails for the time being.

Specifically to the contrary, the Dragons are starting to get riled up, but maybe a bit too much.

With about 30 seconds left in the first period, Calgary is once again moving the puck through the neutral zone. Labsvards, to Mack, to Pederson. Is he hunting for another?

Pederson skates with the puck a bit, pass to-

Tsizling strides in and intercepts it! Pederson doesn't like this very much, so takes out his anger on the nearest Renegade, who seems to not be Tsizling at the time. A big hit, a whistle screech, and Texas will be starting the second period on the power play!
