It's clearly heating up. Both teams know what's on the line.

Anastasia O'Koivu chases down a maneuvering Vince Reaper and lays him out with a hit...

...And it's immediately answered by a trademark explosion from Nathan... uhh, Explosion. He catches Alex Winters with his head down.

There's a scrum after the whistle as both teams take exception to their players being run, but nothing further comes of it.

After twenty minutes, there are some good signs from the Rage that they're going to take their game to another level. They killed two penalties early, and managed to raise their physical presence at the end of the period, but...

Two shots simply isn't good enough. If they want a chance in this one they need to help their goalie out.

The second period starts with a Piotr Czerkawski face-off win versus Jax Aittokallio.

Two minutes into the second, the Rage are looking to reverse their offensive fortunes.

Austin Roenick intercepts a wayward pass in the neutral zone and slides in a perfect lead-in pass to David Kastrba, who cuts back at the blue line to gain some space.

He dishes it to Jax Aittokallio, who moves it to Barret McCarthy.

McCarthy fakes a point shot and finds Roenick streaking into the slot, but he's knocked off the puck by Ray Bork.

It looks like the Pride are going to recover and clear the zone, but McCarthy manages to find the puck before the San Francisco defense can and he moves it to Aittokallio.

The shot comes in with serious speed, and seems to be deflected deftly by Roenick on the way to the net...

But Chris Partridge is up to the task! He tracks the deflection well enough to shoot out a pad and keep the puck out of the lower part of the net.

The rebound isn't far, and the Pride goaltender scrambles to cover the puck up for a whistle.

That's more like the offense you expect from Manhattan. Great puck movement.

Look out! A great move by Filip Zadina to win the puck from Luca Veccelli with a solid hit. The Pride forward then immediately wheels around and snaps a shot on goal that nearly sneaks past Larson.

Excellent physicality and scoring instincts on display there. It's always impressive when a player can make something out of nothing.

He has a reputation for physical play, and watching him, you understand why. He can single handedly shift the momentum in a game with his hitting.

But this time it's a slash that sends Nathan Explosion to the box, after he catches Reginald MacIntyre on the wrist with a stick check.

A quick shot off the face-off from Barret McCarthy to start off the power play, but Chris Partridge handles it with ease.

As if an instant replay, the same thing happens again: Aittokallio wins the face-off in the San Francisco zone, and this time finds an open Luke Thomason. The Rage forward's shot is not enough to beat Partridge, but the goalie can't keep hold of the puck and it rebounds to Craig Finley, who's knocked off the puck by Dominic Montgomery.

A couple of impressive hits by Anastasia O'Koivu and Luke Thomason mark an otherwise poor power play by Manhattan, and Nathan Explosion skates back to the Pride bench after serving his two minutes.

There's a lull of about thirty seconds where both teams seem unable to maintain steady control of the puck.

Eventually, San Francisco's Jack Tanner comes up with possession and gains the zone. He looks back, finds Filip Zadina trailing, and hits him with a perfect setup for a one-timer...

It finds the back of the net!

You have to feel for Peter Larson. He's done so much to keep his team in this game, but a momentary lapse has put the Pride ahead.

The shot had speed and accuracy, as well as the benefit of surprise. It took a good eye from Tanner to find Zadina trailing, and even better technique to hit the release fast enough to surprise the goalie.

1. San Francisco Pride , Filip Zadina 1 (Jack Tanner 4) at 8:57

The Rage spend the remaining minute before the commercial break trying to gain entry into the San Francisco zone, to no avail.

During the TV timeout, Manhattan's coaching staff seems to be drawing up a strategy to get more shots on net. There's no denying they need to improve the quality of their chances.
