Buffalo Sabres Be A GM
#46

So the free agent class was lest than spectacular. Especially when what we needed was defence. I obviously saw that at the end of last season what broke us down was our lack of defence. I felt even with Myers we lacked a great two way defenceman. So I made a trade which we will get to later. First are the two signings.

(79) Kyle Brodziak: Thinking fourth line for him. I had (80) Luke Adam as trade bait and it looked like Adam was pretty much gone. So I decided I needed a new 4th line centre. I like Brodziak quite a bit because he is more of a two way fourth liner. He can score when needed but is also very good without the puck

(77) Robin Figren: AHL signing. I had expected him to play top line in the AHL but he will be used for something else.

So without delay here is the trade.

TO BUF
(83 **** 1/2)Oscar Klefbom

TO EDM
(80)Luke Adam
(77)Robin Figren
2018 2nd round pick

First off I have. tried to avoid trading with Edmonton, for a few reasons. One is that I don't want to make a bad trade because of my biased-ness.. Another is I don't want to turn the Sabres into a team full of Oilers. So I have avoided trading with them. For this trade I saw that Edmonton was the best possible option for making a trade and decided I had to make it. Klefbom is on an amazing contract (2.8 x 4) and will only continue to improve. I can basically guarantee he will be here for the next 4 years because even if I run into cap problems their are players on worse contracts that I can easily move.

Klefboms first few years have been

12/13 11-29-40
13/14 8-31-39
14/15 9-30-39

He has played every game since he started in the NHL. I like this deal a ton for us.

Our second trade was one that I saw coming for over a year, at least the centre part of it. I wanted another D-Man after Klefbom, one that was more defensive and would be able to be a Sabre long term (I will need to re-sign at end of year but I don't think he will want that much more than what he has right now.)

TO BUF
(84)Luke Schenn

To PHI
(82)Jhonas Enroth
BUF 2018 3rd
BUF 2019 3rd

We are starting to lose quite a few of our picks going forward but I would really like to make a push for at least 2nd round this season. That's my goal atm, win a round. Then go from there.

One more right before the season because I noticed we don't have a 4th liner. I wanted to add a player who could fight and saw a cheap one. Both the players I gave up were 2 stars and likely will not even become AHL players.

TO BUF
Mike Rupp

TO WPG
Stanislav Makarov
Kayla Doetzel

Players OTB for us: (Goes by priority of who I will likely be looking to trade first)

(84)Nathan Gerbe: I intended to trade Gerbe some point in last season, but I have had him reach 88 overall before and was hoping he would continue to get better. That obviously didn't happen and his value went down quite a bit. It sucks because Gerbe had really cashed in last off-season as I signed him to a 6.4 x 5 year deal.

(83) Thomas Vanek: Thomas Vanek has had an awful last couple of seasons. He hasn't put up 40 + points since my first season as Sabres GM. I guess he isn't being used to the best of him abilities on the third line but I still expect more out of him.

(83) Cody Hodgson: Hodgson is an amazing choice as 3rd line centre. He can consistently put up 30 + points and can be used in the top six if I have injuries. But obviously I have a ton of centre's being brought up through the system so it looks like Hodgson's days as a Sabre could be numbered.

Season time and we have started off awful. We are currently 12-15-4 through 31 games for 28 points. I have three key injuries atm and I am kidding myself if I thought I had the depth to replace these players. Surprisingly they are not to my defence. Grigorenko is out for 5 weeks, Kristiansen out for 6 and Girgensons out for 2..I don't want to make any drastic moves atm because I still think their's a season to be had and we are not even close to out of the playoff race.

As soon as we get healthy we will be right back in it.

This was a small one but next will probably be bigger.

First off I want to apologize for the lack of updates for this season. I had meant to make it like other seasons but just kind of kept simming

So I got quite caught up in simming and forgot to jot down are record at various points in the season. Here's a recap of what happened though.

Come deadline day our Sabres were below .500 ...I think we had two less wins then losses. (Not counting OT)

Claimed (79) Matthew Lombardi off of waivers for injury depth.

I lost Ondrej Pavelec for 3 weeks around 2 weeks before the deadline. I had (77)Mrazek as my starting goalie. At this point I seriously contemplated acquiring a better goalie but decided against it. Oddly enough this was a pretty good decision. When Pavelec got injured he was not playing great. Mrazek stepped in and completely obliterated my expectations for our rookie goalie. By the time Pavelec got back Mrazek had gotten us into a playoff spot. I took out Mrazek and put back in Pavelec because I wanted to see what he could do. His game from pre trade deadline had completely changed. Our Sabres finished the season 42-31-9..

Playoff time. I made the playoffs as the sixth seed in the East (again like last year only one point seperated me from the 3rd place team)...We really had no big injuries going into playoffs and basically iced are normal lines.

Game 1

CAR 5 BUF 0

Horrible game all around, not only did Pavelec break down but Ward played a perfect gmae

Game 2

CAR 7 BUF 3

Again a horrible game from Pavelec. I almost put in Mrazek but decided we had to win with our starter if we were going to have a chance at the Cup.

Game 3

BUF 3 CAR 2

We sneaked this win out in OT...Keeping our hopes alive for a comeback.

Game 4

CAR 2 BUF 1

We really didn't play a bad game from the look of things, just didn't go our way this game.

Game 5

CAR 3 BUF 1

A bad way to get eliminated. A series filled with bad goaltending on our part and great goaltending on the other teams. I think I need to re-asses things this off-season.

So this season was definitely not what I wanted for us. Probably for me the most disappointing season so far.

So going forward into the off-season I am hoping to re-asses our team. I am not sure what I need to do but obviously the offence didn't click for the first half of the season and then in the play-offs. There is a chance I move Girgensons but that's a outside chance. I need to find a more balanced team.

Looking forward to next season Mrazek will hopefully be ready to take over, Ekblad will hopefully be ready for top 4 minutes along with Pysyk and Vanek/Gerbe will most likely be gone.

Their might be something big I will try to do in free agency. I might try to make a big trade involving some of the spects because we hopefully will be an contender next season.

Weber/Cole will most likely be gone too.

So as it looks we will have a bit of retooling to do in the off-season and then be ready to go full force by the start of next season!

EDIT:

AHL playoffs.

Well the Americans somehow squeezed into the playoffs. They had the leagues best Dman this season in Mark Pysyk (67 Pts).

Round 1

Rochester wins in 7 vs OKC Barons.

Round 2

Rochester wins in 5 vs Abbotsford Heat

Round 3

Rochester wins in 7 vs Chicago Wolves

Calder Cup Final

Rochester wins against complete favourites in the (56-16-5)Ice Caps in six games to win the Calder Cup!

^There's the first real hardware for the Sabres in my tenure. The team wasn't even that good but Pysyk (Was injured the entire first round) has 18 assists.

Draft time yet again. (both players are ***1/2) I drafted:

(18)Preston Fitzpatrick C : A Swiss forward sniper who can kill you with his speed. Going to take a few years of development but I hope he can become a good bottom six forward.

(48) Ruslan Klementyev D : A Huge 6'7 223 pound DFD. I have brought quite a few good D prospects to the orginization recently and I believe he can be another. I hope he can pair with Cedric Christiansen in the future and possible play on my third pairing Defensive line.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So as I said I planned on retooling this off-season. I felt my team needed new blood through it and that meant saying goodbye to some long time Sabres sadly enough. I made two pretty massive trades so here they are.

TO TBL
(83) Nathan Gerbe
(79) Kyle Brodziak

TO BUF
(84 **** 1/2) Sam Reinhart

So I looked at this deal as a win for us. Are centre depth is probably the best in the entire NHL atm and we bring in another. Obviously that means we will have to move one of our other centre's to make room for Reinhart but we think Reinhart is worth it.

So second deal. This may look bad on paper atm but hopefully it comes back and turns out great for us (like the Huberdeau trade)...I acquire a player who is game generated and a former first overall pick. Cap was a big part of this trade because Hodgson wanted 4.5 million and their was no way I was going to give that to him.

TO STL
(82)Cody Hodgson
(80)Mike Weber
BUF 2019 2nd

TO BUF
(77****1/2) LW Georges Bouillon

Georges is a player I scouted quite a bit in his 2015 draft year, U thought he had a great chance at becoming an awesome PWF...He is also amazingly responsible defensively and with a year of grooming in the AHL will be ready for minutes in the NHL hopefully by next season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Free Agency!

Most are depth signings in case of injuries. I signed

(76) Travis Moen: Good defensive forward, can play PK if I need him.

(76) Chris Neil: Obviously an amazing checker. Great player to get under the skin of opponents!

(76) Erik Christensen: A good depth guy. Has 87 faceoffs in case I need a 4th line centre at any point. His offensive stats aren't bad either.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Erik Gudbranson was off-sheeted. I decided to let him go. Obviously that Brown trade ended up being horrible for us but whatever. I got a 2nd and lets call that a day.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Player Development

Pascal Lemieux 74-83 (Holy fuck, His offensive stats are very high. NHL ready)
Mark Pysyk 78-84
Marty Frk 65-69 (Fuck, he went from four and a half stars to just four)
Aaron Ekblad 76-79
Teuvo Teravainen 63-66
Linden Springer 58-63

Horvat really hasn't developed so far. Hopefully he will this season.

Why did you let Gudbranson go? Was the offer-sheet that high?

Good to see some of your players developed like that, Pysyk and Ekblad should be a big help for your team and Lemieux certainly is a nice surprise Smile

I think it was 3.1 million for a 2nd round pick. I just wasn't prepared to pay that for a 8th dman on my team. In retrospect I probably should of done something like I did with Tuebert trading him for more then the offer-sheet.

Yah I was pretty shocked by Lemieux also guys. It was surprising enough when I was signing my picks last off-season that he was already in his mid 70's... Idk if he gets any better but he's already a pretty nice player.

Vanek's still on the team Tongue ..All the teams that are interested in him don't have room for him cap wise. I guess since my cap isn't a huge issue I could take something back, just not quite sure what I would take back from these teams atm.

4.75 and he's 83 overall. I resigned him for pretty long when he was set to become a FA so if I didn't trade him right away he could still be on my team.

I might be able to squeeze out a first for him, we'll see.

Fuck, forgot to save the game after last night so have to re-sim first 1st 15 games.

So it seems as if this is our Sabres break out season. Mrazek started the year with a shut out against last year's president cup winning New York Islanders and ever since then the team has been playing great! 15 games in we are 13-1-1 and are scoring all over the place. Our D is holding real strong as well. With this amazing effort it slots us first in the east. ..I think what makes us a better team this year than in years past is that our bottom six are actually bottom six players. In the past I have had top six players playing bottom six roles (Gerbe/Ennis/Brown etc etc) and that hasn't been good for our organization or the players we've had. Very happy with the season thus far and can't wait to find out whats to come!

13-1-1 through 15 games.

We are tied with Calgary for first in the league. LOL. I look over their roster and they literally have Baertchi/Irving and then no one else. Irving is always amazing in my sims and he literally does this all the time.
