S49 WJC bronze Medal Game: World vs UCORCAL

Between The Pipes

Let's take a look at tonight's starting goaltenders.

For Team World, Emiko Spector @"MantoRune" steps between the pipes wearing the red and white jerseys. Spector -- whose international playing future with Japan is in doubt after she expressed her desire to play for another international federation this past offseason -- has been a backstop for Team World throughout the tournament, posting a 9-4-1 record with a 2.97 GAA. She was shelled in her last start against the British Isles, who defeated Team World 5-3 to move on to the gold medal game.

For UCORCAL, Knox Booth @"Tate" will hold down the fort as he tries to help bring home the first medal in UCORCAL history. Booth -- who was, oddly enough, born in Canada -- was 8-4-1 in the exhibition round with a 3.27 GAA. Like Spector, he is also coming off of a five-goal-against performance in the semifinal game against DACH (that's Austria, Germany, and Switzerland for those who aren't in the know).

Both goalies with something to prove and something they're looking to forget! One of them will replace the pain of the semifinal defeat with a shiny new bronze medal to share with their teammates tonight.

Five Minutes to Puck Drop

The pregame presentation started twenty minutes ago. If you can believe it, they are playing every anthem. By my count so far, we've heard: Japan, Nigeria, and now the Netherlands, with at least Russia, Czechia, and Latvia left.

Love the WJC.

We Are Underway in Prague!

Finally, after all of the anthems, the teams have lined up at centre ice for the faceoff.

In the first two minutes of the game, UCORCAL are buzzing in the World end, feeding off of the home(ish?) crowd's energy.

A shot from Artem Mozgov @"diacope" is deflected by Skao Anazibf @"nour", but Spector stays with the change of pace and hangs on to get Team World some breathing room and allow for a line change.

Five minutes into the first period: HUGE hit by Derek Bohne Jr.

UCORCAL definitely wants to set the tone early, with Derek Bohne Jr. @"wumaduce" laying a HUGE hit on one of the World players as they carry the puck out of the zone.

...But That's a Penalty

The officials decide that Bohne's hit was a bit too overzealous, so the defenseman gets the gate for roughing.

Powerplay Goal by Team World!

Team World opens the scoring, as Japan's Hariken Urawa is able to curl to the slot and uncork a rocket over the shoulder of Booth.

Three Minutes Left in 1st: Powerplay for UCORCAL

Derek Bohne Jr. makes up for the earlier penalty by drawing a penalty of his own in the defensive zone, as Hariken Urawa is a little too overzealous on the forecheck and gets called for Hooking. UCORCAL will try to tie the game before the end of the period.

UCORCAL Evens The Score!

[Image: final_5d9149ffa3eeee0014677255_422876.gif]

UCORCAL makes no mistake on the powerplay, as Kaspars Claude @"Bruins10" snipes from the point to tie the game!

End of the First Period

The goal by Claude has certainly gotten the crowd back into the game as the horn sounds to end the first period.

Fairly even game so far, as UCORCAL is outshooting World 13-9. Both teams are 1/1 on the powerplay.

Second Period Underway

Team World seems to have gotten things in order in the locker room, as they're taking it to UCORCAL to start the second frame.

Parmborg just hit the post behind Booth, and Zbigniew Pokrywka @"thebigschnoz" nearly got his stick on the loose puck to restore the lead for Team World.
