#26

Day 19 showcased an exciting matchup between the 2-3 Echo Ofthevoids and the 5-1 Bravo Champions. Coming into the day, Echo found themselves in 5th place in the tournament in points percentage, but a win against the top-heavy Champions would move them up to a tie for second place. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Champions were looking to continue their dominance as the top seed and favorites to win the tournament. The key to the game for Bravo revolved around getting the puck to their top four scorers (White, Walter II, Kanoff, and Svenson), all of whom would be the highest scorer on 3 of the remaining 5 teams in the tournament, while Echo would be focused on maintaining possession through physical play and faceoff wins, the only two metrics in which they outperform Bravo.

The first period was full of action the second the puck dropped, with Mohammed Cuddles showing off his slick stick handling in close to give Echo the 1-0 lead four and a half minutes in. Just under two minutes later, Martin Nemo and Tomas Grygera set up Ethan Price to make it 2-0, which was just the start of the exceptional nights that the latter two would go on to have. Following suit, the Champions scored 2 goals in under a minute themselves, with Walter II and Danny White each scoring and picking up an assist as well, to tie the game at 2. The first period ended with a bang, with three goals being scored in minute. Price and Svenson both picked up their second goal, while Shlapp Shaht lived up to his name, giving the Ofthevoids a 4-3 lead with a cannon of a slap shot from Vladimir Khristorozhdestvensk’s second helper of the game.

The second period saw more back and forth action, starting with Mattias Teller giving Echo a 5-3 lead. Bravo came storming back with two goals of their own, with Danny White picking up his second of the night, and Tim Demmer finishing a nice passing play set up by Veikko Vatipaa and Bradley Barkov. With the game tied at 5, Ethan Price picked up his hat trick goal as well as a fourth, while Tomas Grygera picked up the ‘Rocket League’ playmaker badge with assists on both goals for his third of the night. Both goals were set up with great neutral zone passing from long-time Finnish teammates Jukka Timonen and Miro Slapskinnenen respectively, each picking up a secondary assist. With his team up 7-5 and Bravo making a goalie change, Echo’s coach made the questionable choice to abandon the offense and try to close out the game by playing the trap, only generating 7 shots on goal for the rest of the game.

The defensively focused plan backfired, with Squid Actual and Svenson both scoring in the third period to tie the game at 7, with Bradly Barkov picking up a playmaking badge of his own with an assist on both goals. With all the momentum going to Bravo and a severe lack of offense being generated for Echo, overtime looked to be a sure thing. But with two minutes left in the 3rd period, Mohammad Cuddles ended the game the same way he started it, by burying a shot after deking by a defender, to give the final score of 8-7 Echo. Despite blowing four different leads, including three 2 goal leads, Echo was able to hang on to improve to 3-3, and give the top-ranked Bravo their second loss in a row.
