Chicago Cubs Be a GM
#1

As I'm sure you know activity with these be a GM's died out for quite a while, but it seems to be back. While I could revive my Blackhawks one (which is still a possibility for the future) I wanted to do something different, and with MLB 13 The Show recently coming out along with the fact that I'm a pretty big baseball fan I decided to a MLB Be a GM (or franchise as it's called in the game).

My team will be the Chicago Cubs because 1)it would be nice to win a World Series with a team known for futility. and 2)they are the team I root for, even with all of said futility.

I'll try to keep each season to a post beginning with Spring Training and ending with the offseason.

Expect the first post later tonight.

Okay, a couple of days after I said it would start, but it is starting.

Even before I started with any games I wanted to swing a deal.

To BAL
=====
CP Carlos Marmol

To CHI
=====
SP Chris Tillman
RF Trayvon Robinson

Now my rationalization: first of all I don't plan on being competitive for 3-5 years and Marmol's deal was ending that offseason (I think). He is already 30 and I may have been able to get more for him at the deadline, but I liked the deal. Tillman is young (25 when 2013 season starts) and has A potential. Robinson was more of a throw in. Plus IRL Marmol scares the shit out of me, he has a great K/9, but his BB/9 is pretty bad, I know it doesn't matter in a game like this, but still.

Now onto the 25 man roster that I used for most of the season. (*=SP in the pen)
SP: Matt Garza (88), Jeff Samardzija (88), Edwin Jackson (82), Travis Wood (82), Carlos Villanueva (81)
RP: Chris Tillman (80)*, Scott Feldman (75)*, Scott Baker (79), Hisanori Takahashi (75), Shawn Camp (73), James Russell (72), Cory Wade (71)
C: Wellington Castillo (76), Dioner Navarro (70)
1B: Anthony Rizzo (79)
2B: Darwin Barney (82), Luis Valbuena (67)
3B: Ian Stewart (66)
SS: Starlin Castro (90)
LF: Alfonso Soriano (86)
CF: Tony Campana (74), David Dejesus (73), Brett Jackson (71)
RF: Scott Hairston (77), Nate Schierholtz (75)

Yeah, not much to say about this group. For the most part this is the group of guys that will play for the Cubs this season, minus the deal I made.

The first eventful thing to happen was the first year player draft.
Round(Overall)
1(2) SP Diego Francisco
2(38) 3B Vernon Balladares
3(68) LF Andres Medrano
4(98) RF Martin Moreno
5(128) 2B Russell Odell
6(158) RP Gary Cooke
7(188) 3B Oliver Urban

Next came the allstar game, I had two representatives, SS Starlin Castro and 1B Anthony Rizzo.

After the season ended I learned that Travis Wood won a Gold Glove, at least something came of this season. My leaders were:

AVG: David Dejesus .296 (466 AB)
H: Starlin Castro 175
HR: Alfonso Soriano/Anthony Rizzo 22
RBI: Anthony Rizzo 89
SB: Tony Campana 37
W: Garza/Samardzija 10
ERA: Feldman 2.16 (25 IP)
SV: Russell 10 (6 players had saves for me in the season)
K: Samardzija 139

The Tigers beat the Reds for the World Series title, and my offseason was pretty quiet. I drafted C Angeo Hidalgo in the Rule 5 Draft and Signed SP AJ Burnett and SP Ted Lilly to fill out my bullpen for next season.

Speaking of next season, that should be up either tonight or tomorrow.

The 2014 season is starting and my 25 man roster is:
SP Matt Garza (89)
SP Jeff Samardzija (88)
SP Chris Tillman (84)
SP Travis Wood (83)
SP Edwin Jackson (82)
SP Carlos Villanueva (81)*
SP AJ Burnett (76)*
SP Scott Feldman (76)*
SP Ted Lilly (74)*
RP Scott Baker (79)
RP James Russell (74)
CP Antonio Mesa (69)
C Angelo Hidalgo (78)
C Wellington Castillo (75)
1B Anthony Rizzo (83)
2B Darwin Barney (81)
2B Luis Valbuena (70)
3B Ian Stewart (69)
SS Starlin Castro (94)
LF Alfonso Soriano (69)
CF Tony Campana (77)
CF Brett Jackson (74)
CF Dave Sappelt (72)
RF Scott Hairston (76)
RF Nate Schierholtz (75)

A little bit into the season I was sent an offer that I immediately accepted.

TO ATL
--------
RP Scott Baker

To CHC
--------
SS Taylor Pastericky
CP Rick Cousins
SP Brandon Beachy

Could this trade be any easier to accept? Baker is 79 OVR and pushing 30, Pasternicky is a young shortstop with decent potential, Cousins is a good closing prospect, and Beachy is a great young pitcher. No brainer.

The draft was next and I picked,
Round(pick)
1(3)SS Mitchell Coyle
2(35)3B Fred Lindstrom
3(65)RP Antonio Tejada
4(95)RP Derek Hernandez
5(125)3B Thad Pitts
6(155)C Peter Steiner
7(185)LF Francisco Feliz

I had two allstars: Hidalgo and Castro

At the end of the season, my teams finished:
AA Smokies 29-41
AAA Cubs 46-98
MLB Cubs 64-98 (5th)

My leaders for the season were, AVG: .290 Rizzo, H: 188 Castro, HR: 24 Hidalgo, RBI: 83 Rizzo, W: 13 Beachy, K: 127 Garza, SV: 25 Mesa.

Hidalgo won ROTY and BArney won the Gold Glove for 2nd base.

In the offseason Soriano retired and I swung another deal.

To COL
--------
SP Edwin Jackson

To CHC
--------
SS Willy Cabrera

Meh, Jackson was outside of the rotation so I figured I'd deal him while he still had some value, Cabrera is a very strong prospect.

Leading into 2015 I had two of the top 50 prospects.

In the Rule 5 Draft I selected 3B Jeff Nava. In free agency I signd RP Craig Stammen, SP Kevin Correia, RP Anthony Swarzak, and RF Herbert Hathaway. Hathaway is a decent prospect while the other three are just stop gaps until my young guys are ready to step in.

Next season up tomorrow.

2015 is now upon us and this is my 25 man roster:
SP: Matt Garza (89)
SP: Chris Tillman (88)
SP: Brandon Beachy (87)
SP: Jeff Samardzija (87)
SP: Travis Wood (82)
SP: Kevin Correia (76)*
SP: Scott Feldman (76)*
RP: James Russell (77)
RP: Michael Bowden (76)
RP: Anthony Swarzak (73)
RP: Cory Wade (72)
CP: Antonio Mesa (74)
C: Angelo Hidalgo (80)
C: Wellington Castillo (74)
1B: Anthony Rizzo (87)
2B: Darwin Barney (80)
2B: Juan Benitez (73)
2B: Luis Valbuena (72)
3B: Jeff Nava (78)
SS: Starlin Castro (97)
SS: Willy Cabrera (77)
CF: Tony Campana (79)
CF: Brett Jackson (78)
CF: Dave Sappelt (75)
RF: Nate Schierholtz (76)

In the draft I acquired:
1(3) LF Guy Ament
2(35) SP Manny Perez
3(65) CF Andres Escobar
4(95) 3B Michael Valdez
5(125) 1B Rodney Donovan
6(155) C Ray Varela
7(185)LF Rex Gonzalez

Anthony Rizzo was selected in the Homerun derby. He also took part in the allstar game with Hidalgo.

At the end of the season, the Smokies (AA) finished at 30-40, the AAA Cubs finished 55-89, and the MLB Cubs finished at 81-81, which I was pleased with.

My leaders were:

AVG: Castro .313
H: Castro 192
HR: Rizzo 36
RBI: Rizzo 120 (Castro also had 100)
SB: Campana 61
W: Garza/Wood 12
ERA: Bowden 3.30 (111.2 IP)
SV: Mesa 39
K: Beachy 144

Garza and Barney won gold gloves, and Rizzo was third in MVP voting. The Pirates won the World Series over the Jays.

In the offseason, Takashi retired and I lost Samardzija in free agency (for whatever reason it wouldn't let me offer him a contract until a couple of weeks in to the offseason, he chose to sign elsewhere). I have 5 top 50 prospects now. However, this offseason marked the first time I signed anyone noteworthy in Free Agency when I signed 2B Aaron Hill to a 4 year deal worth $13.1 million, I also signed 3B Adrian Beltre (who was 36 at the time) to a 1 year deal worth $4 Million.
