Ireland had a top opponent in the semi's facing Latvia who had won 12 of 13 games so far. They were as tough of a test as Ireland has faced in recent memory and were up 2-1 after the first period. Ireland's experience just took over and they scored 2 goals to win 3-2. First Defenseman O'Callaghan scored on the PP in the 2nd period. Late in the third in a tie game, Ireland was just putting on non-stop pressure. They outshot Latvia 18-6 in the period and unfortunately for Latvia, the Irish managed to score the game winner at 17:16 of the 3rd period. Second line center Dermot Lavelle scored on a breakaway after Jack Tanner sent him in clear from the neutral zone.
Three Stars of Semi Final:
What can we say about the Irish that hasn't already been said? They have won 4 straight gold medals and 11 straight elimination matches in medal round games. If they win tomorrow it will be 5 straight gold medals. What they have done already is amazing and should be celebrated. This is a dynasty already everyone and they look to just extend the legacy. They have no pressure and can just come out and play their game, we all know that doesn't bode well for the United Kingdom. That being said if history tells us anything this could be a repeat of the great Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in the mid 1600's. Ireland can't take the UK lightly and I don't expect them to.
Top Scorers:
The United Kingdom had to face the beasts of Group B, team Austria. Austria won 9 games in the round robin and beat Canada in the Quarter Finals. This game got off to a bang just 3:24 in when Austria's Gabriel Wong scored to put Austria up early. The UK came out a bit sloppy but that early goal against seemed to wake them up. They really started to skate and Reginald MacIntyre scored the tying goal and just 3:04 later the red hot TJ Bayley scored what would turn out to be the game winner. The UK added 2 more goals in the third period to really seal the deal and send the Austrian squad packing.
Three Stars of Semi Final:
The last team to win this tournament before the current Irish streak was the UK! They won gold back in S41 and are looking to put and end to the dominance the Irish nation has displayed here for many years now. This would be their 2nd gold medal ever if they can win it all. Their last silver came in S40. This team has been really scrappy throughout the entire tournament and they have really stood out to me. I am not surprised to see them make it this far and I think this should be a great game. If the UK manage to pull this off it will feel really great doing it against such a top tier opponent in the Irish.

In Closing:
Good luck to both these teams and their management. It has been a long week or so of sims and it's all going to wrap up soon. There will be a PbP today April 17th of the Gold Medal final! Also congratulations to Latvia and Austria who will fight it out for the Bronze medal. Who are you betting on to win it all?
First SHL goal on first SHL shot in first SHL game.
Here are the starting lineups for these two great teams:
Austria:
Latvia:
The two tops team in Round Robin action meet up here in the Bronze Medal game. They fell short of their ultimate goal losing out to Ireland and the UK but these are two very good and evenly matched up teams.
There is no PbP for this game but it is a great one so here is a look at what happened!
1st Period:
The first period saw Austria come out swinging and they looked to have more jump in their step from the second the puck dropped. Latvian defender Maui took a penalty for interference just 1:15 into the first and Austria looked ready to strike. Latvian goalie Artom Zhumbayev was on his A game though and stopped everything they threw at him. Austria managed 18 total shots in the first period alone but he stopped all of them.
After the penalty was killed Latvia did get a bit of momentum themselves and it was their top line who opened the scoring at 5:14 with a beauty tic-tac-toe play that Geoff Higgins finished off to go up 1-0. Assists to his linemates Marius and Andani.
2nd Period:
Starting period number 2 it was 1-0 Latvia and Austria was not ready to pack up their bags just yet. They really played well in the first but just couldn't finish. Austria's top line was really dangerous and just buzzing all night long. The pressure finally got to Latvia and Mike Izzy set up a great shot by Flacko Lagerfield to make it a tie game 1-1. The Latvians were a bit stunned and were clearly off their game for a few moments. Just 21 seconds later Izzy spots Lagerfield streaking up the wing and hits him with a breakaway pass. Lagerfield isn't going to miss from here and bam it's now 2-1 Austria!
3rd Period:
We entered period 3 with a 2-1 Austria lead in a close fought game. Both goalies were really playing well and it looked like this game would come down to the final buzzer. Less than one minute into the period Austrian superstar Alex Light scores on a great setup from Matthew Auston and Gabriel Wong. It's 3-1 Austria and the Latvian fans in the crowd got really quiet. There is 19 minutes left but Austria is a top team and this will be some battle to come back against them. Well something woke up inside the Latvian squad after that goal, it's as if someone turned a switch to dominate on their bench. The Latvians end up scoring 3 straight goals in 12 minutes and just like that the Austrian lead is demolished. It's now 4-3 Latvia! What a game!! First it was Kalvins Zvejnieks at 1:20 and then Eriks Skalbergs and Herb Robert added two more just 1:18 apart.
Now the pressure was all on Austria again. Latvia had their 1 goal lead back that they had in the first period and looked to close the door and win this Bronze medal. Austria's own Alex Light who already had a goal in the game took a sweet feed from the great hands of Matthew Auston and went bar down with a slapper to tie this bad boy back up at 14:09 of the 3rd period, only 41 seconds after Latvia took the lead. Both teams did what they could to win it in regulation but we are headed for overtime!
Overtime:
Here it folks, winner takes all, one goal to win the medal - who will be the hero? Well it didn't take long to end this one as Latvia came out guns a blazing looking to put the pressure on Austria early and end it. It worked ladies and gentleman as second line winger Brock Nuck was the hero of the day scoring a great snap shot in close between the legs of Leitner. His teammates all came flying onto the ice and a huge celebration was had. These guys really play for each other you can tell both these teams really cared to win Bronze here but only one can at the end of the day.
Congratulations on an amazing game by both teams and great tournament. These two were as good as it gets this year but the hockey gods had other ideas.

Hey guys I've been handed the PBP reins and I'll try to get something going in 90 minutes, mebbe more or less. Hurriedly trying to harvest NHL 19 screenshots and stuff. If anyone important can give me a srs idea of who the captains are, that'd be great, although I think I'll roll with Showstopper Jack Tanner and one of the British forwards if theres no official pick.
