- bozzz - 11-17-2016 BREAKING NEWS -- DETROIT, Michigan; In what seems a truly unfortunate and bizarre turn of events, the facilities staff of the Jet Blue Airways Arena made a hasty announcement that they were shutting down the ice rink about an hour before scheduled opening for tonight's SMJHL Four Star Cup Playoffs Game 6 against last year's champions the Halifax Raiders. Thousands of fans who'd come from both Canada and greater Michigan were put out for an extra night, and area hotels are now over-full and having to turn away people for the night -- attendance for a Detroit second-round showing hasn't been this high since S23 when Detroit went on to win the Four Star Cup after clinching the Divisional title. And while Detroit's seasonal play hasn't been as spectacular as that historic year, the personalities on both teams are a large part of the attraction this year. Both teams have a high-profile media presence, both full of notorious and celebrated players who have either legacy claims to members of the SHL Hall of Fame or went spectacularly high in the last few SHL draft classes. Speaking of which, we here at SNL were able to catch-up with a few players as they were being ushered back out of the building this evening in response to the news of the closure, and a few of them gave us comments on the current conditions of play. Quote:SNL NEWSCASTER: So according to Margie D'Agostino, there was a mix-up that lead to the pipes that cool the ice freezing over -- how do you think the delay will affect your play? Are you guys gonna be just as ready to show for it in the morning as you were here tonight? Are ya -- hah, are ya a little worried that something else might happen to the ice here after -- PIETRA VOLKOVA: I heard it was Koolaid? Mistaken for antifreeze? Quote:SNL NEWSCASTER: Yeah us too, seems kind of ridiculous, no? <div align="center"> ![]() VOLKOVA: It's disappointing to have a delay on such an important game. Is it a bit odd? I'd say so. Never really heard of anything like that, not really sure how that could have happened. But there's not much we can do. Gives us more time to prepare, more time to rest and make sure we're 100% ready to give it our all tomorrow. Quote:SNL NEWSCASTER: Alexis! Any comments on the reports of Koolaid-flavored sabotage of the rink? ALEXIS METZLER: Wasn't me. <div align="center"> ![]() ALEXIS METZLER: I only drink the red stuff, and those pipes are clearly green. Quote:SNL NEWSCASTER: Comments on the situation, Toivs? TOIVO KOSONEN: This delay is frustrating. <div align="center"> ![]() TOIVO KOSONEN: We all want to play hockey, everyone's been preparing for tonight so sitting by idly is making everyone jumpy. These problems shouldn't happen at the SMJHL level. But, c'est la vie. <div align="center"> ![]() ZACH EVANS: I was wondering where my Kool-aid went. Quote:SNL NEWSCASTER: I can't -- are you being serious? And there you have it folks. Starting lines are locked in, time is set for the morning -- hockey gods willing, we'll have a game to watch. I might have to try to watch both round 2 games - bozzz - 11-17-2016 Game time here at Jet Blue Stadium, folks – and it’s already going to be a rough one, that much the fans can promise you; according to facility security, they’re already had over two thousand tweets and texts utilizing their new “Page an Usher†program they’ve PSA’d on the jumbotron, and doors have been open for only 15 minutes folks. Their number one most-tweeted concern? “This guy in the neighboring seat’s an asshole.†Have these people even been to a hockey game before? What an absolute waste of technology. Out on the ice for warm-ups, both teams have been looking alright if a little tense – Joey Ryan for the Falcons and Marc Leclerc for the Raiders facing off against their previous teams as they have been so far this series with varying degrees of animosity and focus; there’s been some chirping during warm-ups, but both teams are known for being a little punchy when given the opportunity to exercise their mouth-holes. Word from the refs is that puck drop will be happening in about 30 minutes – starting line-ups are as listed, no healthy scratches. (tfw you do a mid-day pbp and ain't no one around to watch it, but.... get hype??) - GroupMeIsKindOfOkay - 11-17-2016 I'm HYPE - BANNING - 11-17-2016 HAIPED - MWHazard - 11-17-2016 Actually kind of hype as well tbh - Wasty - 11-17-2016 Highpe - Toivo - 11-17-2016 ahoy - bozzz - 11-17-2016 00:00, START OF FIRST PERIOD, DET 0 -- 0 HAL The boys and girls are lining-up, and there’s the whistle! Joey Ryan deftly bats the puck back to his squad as Reflieux’s a hair too slow to control the biscuit – Sinikka picks up the puck, oh – vicious hit from Leclerc into the boards that has Detroit fans on their feet booing, looked a little too low and too enthusiastic even from here, but the refs aren’t whistling it down. Zach Evans retrieves the puck, passes it along, unhindered now moving forwards into the Halifax zone at only 0:11 with absolutely no resistance from Halifax except Leclerc doing his best to keep up with a swiftly advancing Evans, who shoots Leclerc blocking it with his thigh, and that looks like it’s gonna hurt, but we’re not done folks, Metzler’s got the puck off Leclerc’s still-prone body and snaps off a wrister—no good! Back out to Atmey, who does the same from the far slot – and it’s wide too! Metzler again, and where the hell is Halifax’s defense? Dekes, trying to tango with Pel who’s been creeping up her crease, sees a hole top shelf – SHOOTS – <div align="center"> ![]() Sticks to Pel’s glove like Velcro. The Raider’s back-up smiles and winks for the camera as she pasts her first test of the game. No goal, and we’ll be setting up in Halifax’s zone in a minute. - bozzz - 11-17-2016 5:03, 1st Period, DET 0 – 0 HAL Alex Reed and Josh Merica face-up, and it’s off to the races with Halifax back-up and out of their zone. Solid efforts in neutral ice, but the puck just not finding the net down in Detroit’s end. Alexsander “The Russian Bicep” Komarov now chasing down a puck along the boards, I’m not quite sure if he turned in time to see Wiljian “Wild Man” Zjang barreling down the ice behind him, but oh – apparently Zjang’s elbow seems enthusiastic to introduce itself to Komarov’s shoulder – Zjang’s knocked Komarov into the boards and off the puck -- -- the two seem to be taking a water-cooler break to talk about cute boys and the latest reality tv show spoilers, and by the looks of it, Komarov doesn’t take kindly to Zjang spoiling last night’s episode of “16 and Pregnant” for him; a lot of shoving going on down there, ref, but no gloves off and there’s the whistle now – <div align="center"> ![]() No penalty it seems, but the two are probably going to have to return their friendship bracelets to Claire’s after the end of this afternoon’s game. <div align="center"> ![]() - vbottas17 - 11-17-2016 Quote:Originally posted by bozzz@Nov 17 2016, 08:37 PM  ![]() - bozzz - 11-17-2016 07:02, 1st Period, DET 0 – 0 HAL Detroit getting steamrolled by Halifax in the neutral zone, but Halifax passing not doing much to help themselves. Greta Iverson now stripping Jari Sinikka of the puck with a squeaky-clean open-ice hip-check, puck gets moved along to Reflieux. Sinikka gets his own back, and hits the man – but falls, failing to lose control of the puck, which – -- actually hold on, I can’t see the puck in the pile of bodies at the point of Detroit’s defensive zone, who – PIETRA VOLKOVA SCOOPS IT OUT FROM UNDER METZLER’S ASS THANKS TO A QUICK POKE FROM JLR, AND RELEASES IT IMMEDIATELY; A COMET OF A NO-LOOK WRISTER WILL IT BEAT ANDERSON? <div align="center"> ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() THE RAIDERS ARE ON THE BOARD! Reflieux manages to snap the puck backwards towards the Halifax line, but the pass is fumbled and scooped by Kyle Kylrad who dances it around Kosonen, thoroughly beaten by Kylrad’s soft hands, charges right up the ice on a breakaway headed for Pel – the bullying crowd quiet now with a collective held breath – Kylrad dances left, Kylrad dances right, Looks to shoot fivehole—A FAKE OUT, OH! BACKHAND SPIN-O-RAMA TO HIGH BLOCKER SIDE, CAN PEL GET TO IT IN TIME? Yes. Yes she can.
