- Keenan - 12-30-2012 I was on the fence about going through a mini-rebuild this season, so I decided to keep everything steady for the first 20 games of the season and splitting time between both my goalies during that time, how things ended up would help me choose what direction to run the franchise in. After 20 games we were sitting at .500, so I decided to go for a rebuild, but since I do have a solid core of players this is not a full out rebuild but a minor one, consisting of me trading away all of the players I was confident that I would not be using in 2 or 3 years. With Simpson nearly matching Crawford in most goalie stats after 20 games (Simpson had a slightly worse GAA and SV%, but a better record) I made my first deal: TO CHI -------- EDM 2017 1st TO EDM --------- G Corey Crawford I felt like Simpson was ready to step up and be my #1 and with this being a throwaway year for me, mainly to get many of my prospects higher ratings, I let this one go. My scout said this would be a good draft so having another 1st rounder won't hurt. Before I get into the other trades I want to talk about the injuries, I really only had 2 main ones, both Lehtivuori and Keith went down for two months. Also I decided to make most of these deals now rather than at the deadline in order to pick up a better pick in the upcoming draft. I realize I will probably miss the playoffs, but I'm hoping for a top 10 pick from Chicago, immediately after dealing Crawford I scoured the free agent pool for a goaltender to back up Simpson I found one in Dan Ellis and signed him to a 1 year deal worth 1.135M, I feel like I could've found a cheaper goalie, but I was not in a state of financial distress so I just spent it all. A few weeks later I completed four trades in a day, the first of which was: TO CHI -------- COL 2017 1st TO COL -------- RW Marian Hossa There was no doubt in my mind that I wouldn't bring Hossa back. He is currently 37 and on the last year of his deal it made total sense to flip him, especially if I was ruling out making the playoffs. I feel like I could've got more for him, but he simply did not match any team's trading block. His high salary also forced my hand and made it so that only a handful of teams could have accepted him without giving someone high priced away in return, and the whole point of this is to get younger and to not block the younger guys, I didn't want a journeyman third liner in return when I could let my prospects play. TO CHI -------- Boston 2017 1st RW Aaron Voros TO BOS -------- LW Patrick Sharp This is the one trade that I'm still not sure I made the right move. My LW depth in the organization is pretty bad and I'm sure I would've had enough money to resign him in the offseason, but I figured he is getting up there in age if I were to keep him and trade him at his next contract year his value wouldn't be as high. Voros was just a throw in as Boston had a full roster, but now I'll have four 1st rounders in the 2017 draft. Depending on where those four picks are I may trade 2 to move up to a higher pick. TO CHI -------- LW Franklin Dingman TO PHI -------- D Joonas Lehtivuori CHI 2017 3rd The third was just a throw in, a little extra to help make the deal go through, and since I have so many picks in store I don't feel like I'll need the 3rd anyway. Dingman is 20 yrs old and has 3.5 star potential. I'm severely lacking in LWs in the organization and have none that are above 2.5 potential so I figure I could help fill a hole, while getting rid of a guy who is only blocking my defensive prospects. TO CHI -------- C Nathan MacKinnon TO LAK -------- RW Ben Smith Smith is now out of his progression time and sat at only mid 70's overall, I dealt him for MacKinnon because he is a household name, but I was surprised to see he was only 3 star potential, but I still feel this could be a great deal for me. The final move I made before the half was a waiver pickup: Jamie Oleksiak Oleksiak is a 23 year old defender who is 71 overall with 3 star potential. Not too shabby and really the first attractive player I've seen on the waiver wire this whole time. So at the half my team sits at 23-24-3 with my leaders being: G: Patrick Kane 22 A: Jonathan Toews 36 +/-: Duncan Keith 6 PIMS: Brent Seabrook 68 W: Kent Simpson 18 Also if the season ended today the teams I have first rounders from would finish 3rd (EDM) 7th (COL) 22nd (CHI) and 23rd (BOS). Here's to hoping everyone falls a bit in the standings! - Keenan - 12-31-2012 So 20 games in I was ready to call this season a lost cause and get ready to compete the next year or two. Well, I finished 40-34-8, good enough for a playoff spot. I'll now get to the road to this point. My only allstar was Kane, simple enough. I really didn't do much. I didn't have many injuries, so I won't cover those either, but I did have a couple of waiver pick ups, first: C Ryan Strome Strome is 23 years old with 3 star potential and 73 overall. Not a great player, but I hope he progresses well and can fit in as a fourth line center next season. The next claim I made, which surprised me was: RW Danny Briere I didn't pick him up to keep him mind you, I felt since I traded away older guys in Hossa and Sharp, I should lose Briere too, there was no need for him on my team, so I did: TO CHI -------- C Bernd Schaver TO WAS -------- RW Danny Briere Washington was the only team who had a match with Briere, and while I would've preferred getting a pick they weren't interested in moving any, and Detroit had their first already. I do however end up with Schaver who is a 3.5 star potential 69 overall centerman. I had considered trading Keith at the deadline, but I felt like the team would be better off we me resigning him. We'll see how that goes during the offseason, but that's the plan right now. So anyway, we finished 15th overall, Edmonton finished 8th, Colorado 12th, and Boston 25th. I'm liking the 6th overall I'll get from Boston and hopefully Colorado and Edmonton get knocked out in the first round. I'd like to win it all, but I doubt it so if I do get knocked out in the first round it won't hurt. The surprised didn't end there, now onto my first series against #1 seeded Phoneix. Series 1: vs Phoenix Game 1: W 4-2 Game 2: L 4-0 Game 3: W 2-0 Game 4: W 3-2 Game 5: W 2-1 Alright! My first playoff series win as a GM, and it was in a year that I had least expected. Well on to round 2: Series 2: vs Calgary Game 1: W 4-2 Game 2: L 3-2 Game 3: L 5-3 Game 4: W 4-1 Game 5: L 4-2 Game 6: W 4-3 Game 7: W 4-1 Wow, another one, lets just get right to round 3: Series 3: vs Nashville Game 1: W 4-3 Game 2: W 3-2 Game 3: W 3-1 Game 4: W 2-1 Nice, first playoff series sweep and we're on to the cup! Stanley Cup: vs Philadelphia Game 1: L 5-3 Game 2: L 2-1 Game 3: W 2-1 Game 4: L 3-2 Game 5: L 6-2 Well, it was about time that our magic ran out, I couldn't be happier for our team and I hope this is a big step forward for us. On to the awards, I have also won a team award and had a player win an individual award for the first time in my tenure as GM. We won the Campbell Bowl (Western Conference Stanley Cup representatives) and G Kent Simpson won the Calder (Rookie of the Year). On to the draft, before making my first round selections, I made one more trade. TO CHI -------- 2017 1st (5th OVR) TO ANH --------- D Niklas Hjalmarsson 2017 2nd C Justin Dowling Good trade, at least I think so. I had a logjam at defense between my established guys (Keith, Seabs, Hjal, Leddy) and my prospects (Morrow, Wardley, Semiens, Glebov) so I figured getting rid of one of my established players for a good prospect . The 2nd rounder not only was the second to last pick in the round, but I'm essentially just trading up 55 picks anyway. Dowling was my "big" free agent acquisition last season, and with as many serviceable and up and coming centermen I have he was easy to cut loose as well. 5th overall is a great place to be picking and it was the highest pick on the block, glad I got it. After that, here's how the draft went: 1(5) Frederick Konowalchuk LW 1 (6) Rocky Brewer LW 1 (17) Mikko Lehtinen C 1 (20) Mats Stalberg D 1 (29) Gilbert DuPont LW 4 (119) Danny Faksa C 5 (149) Grant Godard D 6 (179) Edgar Abid LW 7 (209) Joel Kolanos RW I'm very happy with how this draft turned out. I was able to get three strong LW prospects, a position I don't really have much depth at, along with a D and C prospect. After my first rounders though, the other guys are just footnotes and will more than likely never play a game in the NHL. Before the resign phase, here's how everyone progressed: Walch 81 -> 83 Frolik 85 -> 84 Hayes 81 -> 82 Shaw 77 -> 78 Leddy 83 -> 85 Keith 90 -> 88 Seabrook 86 -> 85 Glebov 77 -> 79 Simpson 77 -> 81 I began the resign season by releasing RW Aaron Voros and G Dan Ellis. I then resigned a bunch of players: D Duncan Keith, D Nick Leddy, D Vladimir Glebov, D Duncan Siemens, D Joseph Morrow, G Kent Simpson, G Brandon Hope, RW Jimmy Hayes, RW Andrew Shaw, RW Michal Vachovec, LW Brandon Saad, C Ryan Strome, C Alexis Loiseau, C Brend Schauer, C Aleksander Barkov, D Morgan Reilly, D Adam Pelech, D Evan Wardley, and D Jamie Oleksiak. I also signed all of my first round picks from this year to entry level contracts. I then went into free agency, my most obvious needs being a second line winger and a backup goaltender. I was able to sign the top available winger and one of the best goalies available (it was a bad year for free agent goalies) in TJ Oshie and Libor Kasik. One final thing before the season starts, for the first time since I've taken over there will be a new assistant captain (It's been C: Toews and A: Keith Sharp since I've started) since I dealt Sharp. The new assistant captain is Mark McNeill beating out Brent Seabrook and Patrick Kane. Since I already have Toews and Keith wearing letters I wanted someone with more grit to wear the final one. Had this been a few years ago I would have probably given it to Seabrook, but I don't know if I'm going to extend him when his contract is up with all of my defensive prospects coming up. Kane was third because the fans like him, but I personally think that he gets in too much trouble to represent our team. Another thing about McNeill is that he worked his way from the AHL to the second line center. LINE 1: Frolik/Toews/Kane Nothing I can say that hasn't been said already. Kane and Toews have been very consistant, Frolik has seen his overall fall a bit, but I'm not worried until it becomes a pattern. LINE 2: Oshie/McNeill/Hayes A very nice 2nd line that is similar to the old one, it consists of two PWFs and a TWF, but they can all score as well. Sounds good to me. LINE 3: Vachovec/Walch/Shaw Walch should be higher but he is blocked, but hopefully he can bring out the best in Shaw and Vachovec. I may end up trading Shaw as he is getting older and is really nothing special. LINE 4: Volek/Strome/Brewer Congrats to Brewer for making the team out of the draft. One the LW prospects I took in the draft start to develop, Volek will be gone, and if Strome starts to falter, I have Loiseau just waiting to fill his spot. D-PAIR 1: Keith/Leddy Leddy just keeps getting better playing with Keith, so I'm going to keep them together. D-PAIR 2: Glebov/Seabrook My defensive pairing. Nothing spectacular, but should be able to put up about 20 points each. D-PAIR 3: Siemens/Morrow Along with Glebov (and Leddy, probably) these two are the future of the blue line for me. They are high potential players and unless they cannot reach that potential I see them sticking around for quite a while. GOALIES: Simpson/Kasik Kasik was signed to a one year deal this offseason to back up Simpson. I hope by next offseason one of my AHL goalies will be ready to step up and back up Simpson. - Keenan - 01-01-2013 Lines entering the 2017-2018 season. There hasn't been much player movement, so this will be a pretty short update. The only thing I've done is claim Vinny Lecavalier off of waivers. I was planning on trading him, but can't find a trade partner :(. I'm going to stop giving injury updates since they're stupid and since I post stats, you can see games played anyway. Anyway, leaders at the half: G: Patrick Kane 28 A: Jonathan Toews 35 +/-: Jonathan Toews 15 PIMS: Brent Seabrook 65 W: Kent Simpson 24 Summary: - Claimed C Vinny Lecavalier off of waivers. |
