- Keenan - 12-29-2012 Ok, eventful second half, looking back on it I have some regrets but in the heat of the moment everything I did made sense. First was the allstar game, Toews was my lone representative. About a week after the allstar game, Bachman became injured for 7 weeks, making this the first time I'm really happy I have both him and Crawford The night before the trading deadline I had a game and after winning entered the deadline at 30-30-5, I abandoned hope for this season and instead wanted to get the ball rolling for the next season. I ended up making two deals at the deadline, the first one was: TO CHI -------- D, Duncan Siemens TO COL -------- 2015 1st The first seemed kind of steep, but Siemens is still young and has great potential and a nice overall where I could see him slotting in one of the pairs next season. I still wanted a first rounder in this draft and knew I had to make a deal to get it done. I did get one, but looking back on it I think the price may have been very steep: TO CHI -------- 2015 1st MTL D Nathan Beaulieu RW Patrick Holland TO MTL -------- C Dave Bolland LW Kyle Beach 2015 3rd 2018 2nd 2018 3rd Here's my though process behind this one: Bolly is a center and I have Toews as a clear cut #1 and with another year of progression McNeill and Kruger should be really good #2 and #3 guys, I didn't feel I needed Bolly for 4 more years at almost $5M, especially with Toews and Kane entering FA next season. I feel Beach isn't going to progress much further. The picks are what most upsets me it seems like a lot, but hopefully they're shallow drafts that wouldn't have produced much in the third round. Soon after the deadline, Keith got hurt for 4 weeks. The season is now over, with the Blackhawks finishing the season 41-35-6 which makes me happy that I sent my pick away but Montreal did finish one spot above me, so not much was lost I guess. Before the draft Chicago offered me a contract renewal for 3 years. Remaining at the helm I prepared for the upcoming draft. 1 (12) Vyacheslav Tursumbayev, D 2 (41) David Walch, C 4 (96) Nick Ritchie, LW 4 (101) Simon Desbiens, LW 5 (131) Chris Bigras, D 6 (161) Charlie Graham, G 7 (191) Darnell Nurse, D Progression: Mark McNeill: 79 -> 82 Marcus Kruger: 79 -> 80 Andrew Shaw: 74 -> 76 Marian Hossa: 88 -> 86 Jimmy Hayes: 78 -> 83 Nick Leddy: 81 -> 82 There may have been others but I'm not 100% sure since I didn't update the OP with my lines from last season. Hossa's now declined two straight seasons and I feel that I should trade him for these reasons: He is stuck on the second line, he is declining, and he is old. I feel I should possibly move him and Sharp for a solid #2 guy with Hayes then taking the other spot on the second line, I'll see what I can do. Free Agency: As I had mentioned in a previous post, my contracts with both Toews and Kane were up, thankfully I wasn't extrememly close to the cap. I released: G Richard Bachman, D Shawn Lalonde, D Ryan Stanton, D Kyle Hope, D Slater Koekkoek, D Nathan Beaulieu, RW Patrick Holland, RW Connor Brown, LW Jeremy Morin, and C Brandon Pirri. I then resigned C Patrick Kane, C Jonathan Toews, C Marcus Kruger, D Nick Leddy, G Corey Crawford, G Kent Simpson, D Joseph Morrow, RW Andrew Shaw, RW Vachovec, and LW Brandon Saad. I signed D Vyacheslav Tursumbayev, C David Walch, and LW Dominik Volek to entry level contracts. When free agency came I signed one player: G Marcus Johnsson, who was the Oiler's 5th overall pick in 2014 and has 4.5 star potential, glad I swiped him. Summary: - Released G Richard Bachman, D Shawn Lalonde, D Ryan Stanton, D Kyle Hope, D Slater Koekkoek, D Nathan Beaulieu, RW Patrick Holland, RW Connor Brown, LW Jeremy Morin, and C Brandon Pirri. - Resigned C Patrick Kane (9.575M/5yr) - Resigned C Jonathan Toews (11.91M/6yr) - Resigned D Nick Leddy (2.77M/2yr) - Resigned G Corey Crawford (1.685M/1yr) - Resigned G Kent Simpson (585k/2yr) - Resigned D Joseph Morrow (530k/2yr) - Resigned RW Andrew Shaw (1.055M/2yr) - Resigned RW Michal Vachovec (575k/1yr) - Resigned LW Brandon Saad (575k/2yr) - Signed C David Walch, D Vyacheslav Tursumbayev, and LW Dominik Volek to entry level contracts. - Signed free agent G Marcus Johnsson (600k/3yr) - Keenan - 12-29-2012 Congrats to the 2015 champion Carolina Hurricanes! Last season both Kane and Toews were over PPG, and Frolik had a career high 70 points. If the line can stay healthy all season, I hope to see big numbers from them. LINE 2: Sharp/McNeill/Hossa McNeill is young, Sharp is in his prime, and Hossa is old, you could write a sitcom about this line. A TWF/PWF/TWF looks good on paper though, and with McNeill still growing teams have trouble ahead. LINE 3: Shaw/Kruger/Hayes Shaw is playing a line up on what he should be playing, and Hayes a line lower, so everything averages out. I hope to see 25 points from each guy this season. LINE 4: Volek/Walch/Smith Walch is the big surprise here, my 2nd rounder this past draft is 75 OVR, good enough to earn a spot on the big team. Volek was drafted a draft or two ago and is now making his debut while we all know Smith's story. A PLY/PWF/SNP line looks good on paper though. D-PAIR 1: Keith/Leddy I've wanted to do this for a few seasons and am now going to act on it. Leddy can still grow so playing on the top pairing with a guy like Keith should give him quite a boost. If he proves he isn't cut out for top pairing minutes I can always switch Seabs back up. D-PAIR 2: Hjalmarsson/Seabrook Two solid reliable guys, both DFDs but both are capable of pitching in about 20 points. D-PAIR 3: Orpik/Lehhtivuori Two more trade candidates, I could send them packing and give the prospect pair of Morrow/Siemens a try, but right now I'll keep them around. If the season starts looking like a lost cause though, I may send them off for parts. GOALIES: Crawford/Simpson Due to having to extend 2/3 of my top line this offseason I was not able to keep both Crawford and Bachman around. Bachman has hit his prime and will no longer be growing, while each of the past two seasons Crawford has outshined Bachman in limited playing time. I keep Crawford on a one year deal to get Simpson some playing time, and hopefully I can cut him loose next season. - Keenan - 12-29-2012 Lines: LINE 1: Frolik/Toews/Kane Third year in a row for this top line and can't argue with the results. At the halfway point the Blackhawks are 31-15-3, the 65 points are 2nd in the conference (which would put us at the 4th seed though, as Nashville has 66), but we are just one point out of first in the conference. I've had a few injuries, though nothing major the longest I've lost someone is Kruger for 4 weeks, Orpik for 2 months, and Frolik for 2 weeks, however when Orpik was hurt, the computer sent me a trade: hurt player for hurt player: TO CHI -------- D, Morgan Rielly TO PHI -------- D, Brooks Orpik To me this was a no brainer. Rielly will likely need another year of seasoning but this trade was about freeing up cap space and giving Duncan Siemens a permanent space in the top 6. Given how well my whole team (especially Sharp) have played I have rejected some trades that had I been playing poorly I would have accepted in a heartbeat, the most prominent being Patrick Sharp to Buffalo for Tim Bozon and Mark Pysyk, I may choose to revisit this trade in the offseason (as both have **** POT) but seeing how nicely my team is meshing right now I'm probably going to keep the core together. Here are my leaders at the half: G: Patrick Sharp 24 A: Jonathan Toews 32 +/-: Patrick Sharp 22 PIMS: Brent Seabrook 63 W: Corey Crawford 27 Interesting Stat of the day: Probably one of the few times I'll ever give an interesting fact, but this one is pretty cool. My backup goalie, Kent Simpson who is rated at 71 OVR, has played 10 games and gone 4-4-2 of those 4 wins, 3 have been shutouts. My starter, Corey Crawford 82 overall, however has played 43 games at 27-11-1 and has 5 shutouts. If Simpson had played as many games as Crawford, but replicated his stats thusfar, he'd have 12 shutouts! I had a rough patch towards the end of the season, but still finished 49-27-6 (104 points) leaving me as the #1 seed, and #2 overall, one point behind Montreal. I had three allstars at the game this year: Patrick Sharp, Duncan Keith, and Corey Crawford. The second half was similar to the first in terms of injury, the major injuries incurred in the second half were: Nik Hjalmarsson for 6 weeks, Jimmy Hayes for 3 months, and Marcus Kruger twice, first for 3 weeks then for 2 months. I turned down more trades, although I did see that Buffalo lost Pysyk to Boston via waivers, wish I would've had a chance to claim him, but I didn't. That's about it, it was a very calm period, I'll sim the playoffs tonight although the roundup won't be up for about 12 hours. Game 1: L 4-3 Game 2: L 4-1 Game 3: L 5-1 Game 4: W 4-3 Game 5: W 4-2 Game 6: L 1-0 That was the end of our run, to be honest I was a little upset. We had 104 points on the year and the only major injury we had in the playoffs was losing Hjalmarsson for 8 weeks. But there were some positives as well, the pairing of Keith and Leddy showed great offensive prowess, so much so that I'll probably keep them together again this season. Well, with New Jersey winning the cup, it's time to move on to the draft I suppose. Before making a pick I made a move: TO CHI -------- C Alexis Loiseau TO NYI -------- C Marcus Kruger Really I felt I was paying Kruger too much for what he brought to the table. That combined with the fact that Walch progressed nicely meant that if I were to keep Kruger, he'd likely be on the fourth line, I felt that moving him was better for all parties involved. 1(25) Samu Pirnes RW 2(55) Marc Chartrand RW 3(85) Viktor Bykov LW 4(115) Robinson Stempniak G 5(145) Bruce Kariya D 6(175) Joe Hicketts D 7(205) Cole Hutton LW Decent draft I guess, top two guys have nice potential although they add to my deep RW pool. Once the resign phase rolled around I cut C Phillip Danault, C Vincent Trocheck, C Sergej Tulupov, C Nicolas Petan, LW Coda Gordon, D Dylan Olsen, D Joey Dube. I also resigned C Mark McNeill, RW Ben Smith, D Brent Seabrook, D Niklas Hjalmarsson, G Corey Crawford, C Aleksander Barkov, RW Michal Vachovec, and D Duncan Siemens. LW Viktor Bykov, RW Samu Pirnes, and RW Marc Chartrand were all signed to entry level deals. I signed one player in free agency, C Justin Dowling to fill out my fourth line. Summary: - Beat Colorado in the first round of the playoffs. - Beat by Columbus in the second round of the playoffs. - Traded C Marcus Kruger to the New York Islanders for C Alexis Loiseau. - Released C Phillip Danault, C Vincent Trocheck, C Segej Tulupov, C Nicolas Petan, LW Coda Gordon, D Dylan Olsen, and D Joey Dube. - Resigned C Mark McNeill (3.705M/3yr) - Resigned RW Ben Smith (885k/2yr) - Resigned D Brent Seabrook (6.595M/2yr) - Resigned D Niklas Hjalmarsson (5.025M/2) - Resigned G Corey Crawford (1.84M/1yr) - Resigned C Aleksander Barkov (575k/1yr) - Resigned RW Michal Vachovec (585k/1yr) - Resigned D Duncan Siemens (745k/1yr) - Signed LW Viktor Bykov, RW Samu Pirnes, and RW Marc Chartrand to entry level contracts. - Signed free agent C Justin Dowling (900k/2yr) - Keenan - 12-30-2012 Playoff time!! First round we faced the Avalanche. Game 1: L 2-0 Game 2: W 4-3 Game 3: L 4-2 Game 4: W 2-1 Game 5: W 3-1 Game 6: L 4-3 Game 7: W 4-2 Round 2 was against the Blue Jackets. (Kane's expires after the 19-20 season, Toews a year after that, and Frolik a year after that.) I'm going to have to make some tough decisions regarding them, but in the meantime I'm going to enjoy their presence on my first line. Line 2: Sharp/McNeill/Hossa Yup, the line that I had the best chance of trading last season is still together. Both Sharp and Hossa are free agents next year though, and barring some sort of run like early last season I expect to move them both. Line 3: Shaw/Walch/Hayes I think all of these guys still have potential left (I know Walch does for sure) but if I end up trading away Hossa and Sharp and don't get second line talent in return, Hayes and Shaw will probably find their way up to the second line. Line 4: Volek/Dowling/Smith Meh, that's about it. Smith is done with potential, I only brought him back to give a few of my younger guys time to grow, I doubt he'll have a spot other than injury replacement next season. D-Pair 1: Keith/Leddy Both Keith/Leddy and Seabrook/Hjalmarsson played very well last season, why break up a good thing? D-Pair 2: Seabrook/Hjalmarsson See above. D-Pair 3: Lehtivuori/Glebov Lehtivuori could be moved to give a spot to Siemens. I'm also considering moving Keith, his contract is up after this year and then I can also bring up Morrow. Goalies: Crawford/Simpson Simpson increased to 77 from last season, one more year of progression and I feel like he can be a solid starter. Crawford is on a one year deal so I may move him depending on how we play and if the right deal comes along. - Keenan - 12-30-2012 Line 1: Frolik/Toews/Kane I'm going to keep this line together until their contracts are up. Crawford is on a one year deal so I may move him depending on how we play and if the right deal comes along. - Keenan - 12-30-2012 I was on the fence about going through a mini-rebuild this season, so I decided to keep everything steady for the first 20 games of the season and splitting time between both my goalies during that time, how things ended up would help me choose what direction to run the franchise in. After 20 games we were sitting at .500, so I decided to go for a rebuild, but since I do have a solid core of players this is not a full out rebuild but a minor one, consisting of me trading away all of the players I was confident that I would not be using in 2 or 3 years. With Simpson nearly matching Crawford in most goalie stats after 20 games (Simpson had a slightly worse GAA and SV%, but a better record) I made my first deal: TO CHI -------- EDM 2017 1st TO EDM --------- G Corey Crawford I felt like Simpson was ready to step up and be my #1 and with this being a throwaway year for me, mainly to get many of my prospects higher ratings, I let this one go. My scout said this would be a good draft so having another 1st rounder won't hurt. Before I get into the other trades I want to talk about the injuries, I really only had 2 main ones, both Lehtivuori and Keith went down for two months. Also I decided to make most of these deals now rather than at the deadline in order to pick up a better pick in the upcoming draft. I realize I will probably miss the playoffs, but I'm hoping for a top 10 pick from Chicago, immediately after dealing Crawford I scoured the free agent pool for a goaltender to back up Simpson I found one in Dan Ellis and signed him to a 1 year deal worth 1.135M, I feel like I could've found a cheaper goalie, but I was not in a state of financial distress so I just spent it all. A few weeks later I completed four trades in a day, the first of which was: TO CHI -------- COL 2017 1st TO COL -------- RW Marian Hossa There was no doubt in my mind that I wouldn't bring Hossa back. He is currently 37 and on the last year of his deal it made total sense to flip him, especially if I was ruling out making the playoffs. I feel like I could've got more for him, but he simply did not match any team's trading block. His high salary also forced my hand and made it so that only a handful of teams could have accepted him without giving someone high priced away in return, and the whole point of this is to get younger and to not block the younger guys, I didn't want a journeyman third liner in return when I could let my prospects play. TO CHI -------- Boston 2017 1st RW Aaron Voros TO BOS -------- LW Patrick Sharp This is the one trade that I'm still not sure I made the right move. My LW depth in the organization is pretty bad and I'm sure I would've had enough money to resign him in the offseason, but I figured he is getting up there in age if I were to keep him and trade him at his next contract year his value wouldn't be as high. Voros was just a throw in as Boston had a full roster, but now I'll have four 1st rounders in the 2017 draft. Depending on where those four picks are I may trade 2 to move up to a higher pick. TO CHI -------- LW Franklin Dingman TO PHI -------- D Joonas Lehtivuori CHI 2017 3rd The third was just a throw in, a little extra to help make the deal go through, and since I have so many picks in store I don't feel like I'll need the 3rd anyway. Dingman is 20 yrs old and has 3.5 star potential. I'm severely lacking in LWs in the organization and have none that are above 2.5 potential so I figure I could help fill a hole, while getting rid of a guy who is only blocking my defensive prospects. TO CHI -------- C Nathan MacKinnon TO LAK -------- RW Ben Smith Smith is now out of his progression time and sat at only mid 70's overall, I dealt him for MacKinnon because he is a household name, but I was surprised to see he was only 3 star potential, but I still feel this could be a great deal for me. The final move I made before the half was a waiver pickup: Jamie Oleksiak Oleksiak is a 23 year old defender who is 71 overall with 3 star potential. Not too shabby and really the first attractive player I've seen on the waiver wire this whole time. So at the half my team sits at 23-24-3 with my leaders being: G: Patrick Kane 22 A: Jonathan Toews 36 +/-: Duncan Keith 6 PIMS: Brent Seabrook 68 W: Kent Simpson 18 Also if the season ended today the teams I have first rounders from would finish 3rd (EDM) 7th (COL) 22nd (CHI) and 23rd (BOS). Here's to hoping everyone falls a bit in the standings! |
